Galicia painted in turquoise blue, with its crystal clear waters

Today we will talk about the wonderful Galician beaches. What better time than the beginning of summer to share information about the unique Galician environment to enjoy it.

Galicia has the longest coastline of all the autonomous communities in Spain: 930 miles long (1498km) which, taking into account that we have beaches up to 7km long, can give you an idea of the concentration of beaches along the entire coastline.

It is also the autonomous community with the largest number of beaches in Spain. Almost all of them are sandy and certainly not overcrowded.

As a basic detail, we have a total of 861 registered beaches, all of them public and with no restrictions other than (in 200 of them) they are smoke-free.

Within the quality categories, 459 of the beaches are considered excellent and bathing is prohibited on only 9 of the 861 beaches. 123 beaches are Blue Flag beaches, both for the undisputed quality of their waters and for the services they offer.

A curious fact is that the further south the beach is in Galicia, the colder the water is. On the other hand, the further north it is, the warmer it is. Despite the notable differences between the north and the south, tracing the coastline from the Rías Bixas to the end of the Mariña Lucense, most of the beaches of the Galician community stand out for the turquoise blue of their crystalline waters.

In the south of the community, we find a majority of paradisiacal coves and sandy beaches where the sea is usually calmer, unlike the beaches of the Rías Altas, where the wildest landscapes predominate with unique natural enclaves and cliffs due to the impact of the waves on the rocks.

Finally, we will make some recommendations for beaches in different areas of Galicia:

  • Rodas Beach (Cíes Islands, Pontevedra);
  • Xilloi Beach (O Vicedo, Lugo);
  • Niñóns Beach (Ponteceso, A Coruña);
  • Beach of Carnota (Carnota, A Coruña);
  • Illote do Areoso (Illa de Arousa, Pontevedra);
  • Beach of Las Catedrales (Ribadeo, Lugo);
  • Picon Beach (Ortigueira, A Coruña);
  • Melide Beach (Ons Island, Pontevedra).
